R5-O13 astromech droid from Clone Wars season 1 and season 2
The R5-series astromech droid was a line of low cost astromech droids built by Industrial Automaton.
Because of their inexpensive construction, however, droids of this series were plagued by a number of design flaws; most obviously, a sullen demeanor and sharp attitude resulting from deficiencies in the machine's personality matrix.
During the Clone Wars, members of the R5-series were used by the Republic for a variety of roles, including use aboard starfighters like the ARC-170 and capital ships like the Acclamator-class assault ship. We could see a similar
R5 droid unit in the first season of the Clone Wars animated film. He was standing in the background behind Anakin's pilots in that hangar, from where the Shadow squadron took off to attack the Malevolence, General Grievous' flagship, which was armed with the dangerous ion weapon.
We could see a green R5 unit in the Clone Wars second season, too. After Obi-wan Kenobi arrived to Rodia, he could barely dodge a similar droid as he was rushing towards the kidnapped rodian child's home.
They were less commonly used by Rebel pilots because the extra height of the
R5 made them a more prominent target in a fighter or a bomber droid socket, although the Alliance would use them in maintenance jobs extensively due to their low cost and the Alliance's desperate need for functional droids of any kind. Rebel technicians also upgraded some R5 units for Y-wing use, bringing their astrogation capabilities up to the level of the R2-series, though the personality flaws persisted. Wedge Antilles also used an R5 model with the designation of R5-D2, nicknamed "Mynock". When first assigned the droid, Antilles judged its slightly larger target profile to actually be an advantage, as it might block a laser that would otherwise reach the cockpit.
Although aboard Imperial warships, R5 units were also used to monitor medical equipment such as life support capsules, it was not a successful story. After some poor sales years, Industrial Automaton discontinued the R5 series in 22 BBY.
We have received a great promotion from the Hungarian Cartoon Network. In
this film a similar green R5 astromech droid skate boarding with the boys, and with R2-D2, and he tries a risky
maneuver, which ends in a large accident. R5 falls on the concrete, breaking his leg. Artoo however comes in time as
always and fixes his fellow astromech's damage. A great promo, which illustrates this R5 in a funny way, making him
even more popular. Check out this great
R5 Clone Wars skatepark promo.
