Custom WED Treadwell droid figure and its story

wed treadwell droidWED Septoid Treadwells were a series of droids that resembled the insect Septoid. This droid series were often called Septoid, because its arms were pretty much like the Septoid legs, and it really looked like that. They had a number of Cybot Galactica 4-DOF robotic arms that spidered out from its body, making the droid like a Septoid with its legs. It also had a multi-range photoreceptor in the middle of its torso, it was the droid’s „eye”.

The septoid, or Ja Field septoid, was a seven-legged insect indigenous to Eriadu. Septoids were fearless pests that survived centuries of attempts to exterminate them, only to adapt and thrive once more. Their exposure to the Eriaduan global pollution only seemed to make them hardier and more numerous, hence the Eriaduan expression 'tough as a septoid.' Its central thorax contained its head, fangs, and eyestalks. Its seven legs, made of serrated chitin and coming to a sharp point at the foot, radiated outward from the thorax. Fortunately, septoids were non-poisonous.

wed_treadwelldroidThe WED Treadwell was a four-armed (with additional sockets available) automaton propelled by a treaded base. The droid's photoreceptors were mounted on a long, thin telescopic stalk, from which protruded various tool-tipped appendages. The standard WED droid had sockets to support up to six manipulators, though variants carried eight or more. These limbs were easy to install and replace, and Cybot Galactica actively encouraged consumers to purchase a variety of appendages for their Treadwells. Despite this versatility, the WED Treadwell was known to be fragile, and the repair droid required much maintenance itself.

The WED series had numerous members, which were identified by their number, for example WED 15, WED 17, or WED 20.

beru néniék droidojaOne of the most well known Treadwell droids was Luke’s. Owen Lars owned a WED-15-77 nicknamed, simply, "Treadwell." Luke was not proud of their droid, because it was in a pretty good shape. WED-15 "Septoid 2" was an other Treadwell droid on Tatooine. He belonged to Fixer, who used him at his job at Tosche Station. Luke Skywalker was envious of the droid, due to his own Treadwell, WED-15-77's limited capabilities. We could see some scenes in the film where we could see their Treadwell droid, which was indeed really poor, had no arms at all, only the head, the neck, and the torso, which is, well, really limited capability.

WED wed1517multi-armed Treadwell maintenance droids were in operation with the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War. It specialized in extending effective operational life to Imperial machines aboard the original Death Star. Like all other droids aboard the Death Star, WED15-17 was lost when the Rebel Alliance attack the Death Star, and when Luke Skywalker’s proton torpedo destroyed the battle station during the Battle of Yavin.

The WED-20 had 7 arms, which could be fitted with multiple different tools to aid in its job. It had tracked locomotion and was equipped with a video recorder to record its work. The WED-20 was almost identical to the WED-15 Treadwell, but it was designed and programmed for an entirely different purpose. It was used by scouts as a first-contact planetary-analysis droid. It would leave the ship and go out to collect samples of the local flora and soil and record images of the fauna. It would use the microlab in its base to perform analysis in the field.

This custom figure was not made by me, its is a present from a fellow customizer buddy, Zoltan Kiszelak. He made one for me, and one for himself, too, so we both have such a droid. It was built on a matchbox, which is a cool and not too expensive idea. The droid has several kind of arms, which helps the droid fulfill multiple tasks.
