Custom pilot droid figure inspired by the movie character
Pilot battledroids are standard battle droids, but with blue shoulders and chests. They usually have not got a backpack. At a first glance one can not determine any other difference between this class of droid and any other, like between most of the CIS droids the difference lies within the programming. These specialized droids were programmed to be able to pilot all kinds of vehicles and vessels used by the droid forces. They were also used in space battles to man turrets, carry ammunition, and
monitor the decks and hangars for breaches and boarding parties. Trade Federation and CIS (Confederacy of Independent Systems)
pilot droids were often seen without their weapons while operating some machinery, starships and other vehicles.
The pilot droids were distinguished by blue markings on their body armor. As non-infantry units, pilot droids did not have the same combat programming as other OOM units, and because of that they were far easier to destroy. They often just stand or sit beside their monitor while a battle is raging around them, doing nothing, like just a
scared spectator of the battle event. If the situation gets dangerous, they still remain by their workplaces, letting Anakin Skywalker, and Obi-wan Kenobi destroy them easily without resistance. Even in the most dangerous situations they don't fight back, but cowardly run away, for example
in this screenshot you can see a pilot battledroid running among the fleeing neimodians. Pilot droids operated anything from Providence-class carrier/destroyers (such as General Grievous' flagship the Invisible Hand which is kindly presented by R2-D2 by a
holographic schematics) and Lucrehulk-class battleships to Armored Assault Tanks and Trade Federation troop carriers and sometimes STAPs. Those battledroids who were assigned to these troop carriers are the only service that wore backpacks, while the most pilot battledroid did not, that is why I custom made a
Trade Federation troop carrier pilot droid, that you can see below, under the article. (You could see these transports when the Trade Federation started their invasion against Theed.)
Originally part of the Trade Defense Force, OOM pilot droids functioned mostly as the ships' crews of the defense fleet. They weren't widely used in the army.
Pilot droids were increasingly deployed as the Clone Wars drew to a close, playing pivotal roles as pilots, saboteurs, and mechanics in tightly contested skirmishes of major battles when all droids were needed. Overall, they weren't part of a separate service but instead shared by the army and navy.
Pilot droids are also known as Engineer droids. We could see them in the Battlefront games. The engineer droids were designed to fly aircrafts and to pilot the (armored) vehicles of the Trade Federation or the Confederacy of Independent Systems. They can repair everything with their fusion cutter, and they even can renew the destroyed FX-7 medical droids, and the Gonk droids, who give you the ammunition. Also, this service can deploy armored turrets, which give you a bigger firepower, and a better protection for the gunner because of its durasteel cover. But this service is not for the frontline, you'd rather to redeploy the destroyed
turrets, repair the damaged armored mechs, and to repair the med and ammo droids. They are also perfect medics, as they can throw a tank of bacta for the injured fellow troopers, and can also give a magazine of bullets for the soldiers, who fight in the front. In Battlefront 2 they can man the laser turrets.
Sitting in these chairs they can gain access to use the turrets of the cruiser, so they can shoot approaching enemy fighters in the space. These engineer droids were not designed for combat, but still, they are not so weak as the basic pilot droid, the engineer droids can defend themselves, when they have to fight, they use powerful shotguns. However they are still not designed to be a first-line droid on the front, they are much stronger then a basic pilot droid. Engineer droids were seen in the Battlefront series, but they had no shoulder markings in Battlefront 1. In Star Wars: Battlefront 2
engineer droids had yellow shoulder markings, while basic blue shouldered pilot droids can be used for
space battles. So if anybody got the mood to try this droid service, you can play with them in the Battlefront series in both episodes, driving field mechs, piloting fighters and aircrafts, or even running and fighting on the battlefield.
