The sandtroopers were basically standard stormtroopers except they had additional training in specialized areas like the deserts. Due to the advanced cooling system the soldier can survive extreme desert conditions, and their helmets and suits really offered them protection from the relentless heat providing the needed temperature for the sandtroopers. Their armor doesn't give protection only against the extreme heat, but the 18 piece anti-blaster cocoon shell like stormtrooper armor was told to provide good protection against firearms, too.

However that didn't seem like this, just remember those ewoks who killed several stormies during the Battle of Endor simply by slaying them with wooden knobkerries till they died, or there is no shots fired by a protagonist that wouldn't kill any totally armored stormtroopers with a single lost shot. Anyway, these storm and sandtroopers armors said to be laser fire proof on paper.

Both the stormtrooper and sandtrooper helmets featured automatic polarized lenses, a built-in comlink, and breathing filters. They carry a large bag pack which contains food and water packs, a long-range comlink, and several other thing that could be vital to survive. All desert sandtroopers carried E-11 blaster rifles, DLT-19 heavy blaster rifles, or T-21 light repeating blasters. There is one more important difference between the sandtroopers and the stormtroopers: sandtroopers wore colored pauldrons as a designation of rank. A sandtrooper sergeant's pauldron was white, while an enlisted trooper's pauldron was all black, but the corporals wore black pauldron, too. Squad leaders, who led units of seven troopers, wore orange shoulder pauldrons. (The one, who stopped Luke and Kenobi in Mos Eisley, was an orange pauldron sandtrooper, played by Mr. Anthony Forrest, whose autogram card can be seen here as a valuable relic for me.) In addition there could have existed a fourth GREY pauldron version, too. This could have been connected to the dewback creatures, since a Power of the Force dewback trooper had been released with grey pauldron. Recently this conception has been modified a bit, according to this NEW dewback trooper, who will be a white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant.

We could see a white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant only a few times in the movies, all were in the New Hope.

The first appearance of the white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant was in a Tatooine scene, while they were landing in the desert to investigate the missing escape pod and the secret plans. A white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant found a small metal part, which would be an evidence that there were droids in the escape pod.

Second time there was a white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant in Mos Eisley, he was identity checking a pedestrian in the background when R2-D2 and C-3PO were sent out from the cantina. The dewback behind him must have sniffed something delicious in his backpack, since it is snooping the survival equipment wondering what is inside.

The third scene is interesting, because this was the first time we could see that small scout droid, which later came with a white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant figure in the Power of the Force line some years or rather decade ago. That is a Mark IV type probe droid, which doesn't have built-in weaponry, but it was a great observer and intercepting monitoring unit, which was able to detect even the illegal radio signals, too. Although that POTF2 white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant figure was brutal muscular, and did not have a bag pack, because you can attach the droid into its place, to make it "hover" above the trooper, yet many fans bought this figure, since this small robot was not available from any other source! You can see a white, a black, and an orange pauldron soldier in this scene, as they hurry towards the hangar.

They arrive in the hangar in the fourth picture, but who knows why... We cannot see the evidence for the elder Kenobi's words, when he claimed the imperial stormtroopers as a precise shooting army, showing their shots on the side of the jawa sandcrawler. Now a squad of "elite" sandtrooper were not able to hit Han Solo, they target him, and shoot him around in a ten meter radius, while Han easily took out some orange, black, and white pauldron sandtroopers, the remaining desperately ran into some kind of cover, and fired back with some really pathetic shots.

When I planned to hand make a white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant years ago, there was ONLY a POTF version, which was really a POWER version, I could not see any steroid sandtroopers in the movie, but this guy is really muscular. There were not any other sandtroopers to buy, but recently there is a better selection for the fans. The new white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant has a nice card design, a lot better torso, great accessories, and cool articulation. But I had to repaint a steroid orange POTF sandtrooper, painting his pauldron white, and giving him a bit dirty look on the body armor while creating my custom white pauldron sandtrooper sergeant figure.
