Dark Jedi,
also known as "Fallen" Jedi, were Force-sensitives, frequently former Jedi, who chose to deny the light side of the Force and/or follow the Dark Side. (Here is a dark Jedi screenshot from the game KotF by our faithful reader,
Darth Stryker.) Although "Dark Jedi" originally referred to a Jedi who had fallen to the dark side, it could also refer to uninitiated Force-sensitives who received no Jedi training but began their careers under another Dark Jedi. Others were simply dark-side users who did not follow the teachings of the Sith or other Dark Side organizations. In some cases, Dark Jedi also included "artificial" Force-sensitives who served the dark side, such as the Reborn and the Shadowtroopers. Also, many Jedi, who were once followed the Jedi life, turned away from what he/she learn and lived amongst them, and changed side, joining the Sith, and the Dark Side of the Force. Some of them were even redeemed, once again becoming a Jedi, returning to the Light, but most of them died in darkness. Real and fictional characters could be called a dark Jedi, too. That is why we meet some well known names amongst them, including Darth Vader, Asajj Ventress, Komari Vosa, Count Dooku (known as Darth Tyrannus), Depa Billaba, Sora Bulq, Jorus C'Baoth, Mara Jade, Desann, Jerec, Juhani, Revan, Kyle Katarn, Galen Marek, Sev'rance Tann, Quilan Vos, Aurra Sing, Xanatos, and many
other, including even Luke Skywalker for a brief period. But we won't concentrate on them in this
article; we direct our focus to those dark Jedi, who were seen in the game Knight of the Old Republic games. Many Jedi seduced by Exar Kun became Dark Jedi. After the death of Kun, many Dark Jedi still existed and served under new Sith Lords like Darth Malak and Darth Nihilus.
So Dark Jedi is the also name given in the Star Wars Expanded Universe to fictional characters attuned to the Force and adept in its Dark Side. They exist by that name in the video games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series and the Jedi Knight series; however the term is never used in any of the six Star Wars films.
Dark Jedi is a label to a specific archetype of characters in the Star Wars Expanded Universe defined as Force-attuned beings that meet two requirements: they do not hold themselves to the dogma of either the Jedi or the Sith, (however they are still closer to the Sith than the Jedi,) and they use their Force abilities for less than virtuous acts that would normally be looked down upon by the Jedi Order. As it has been mentioned, the concept of Dark Jedi is not endorsed anywhere within the movie trilogy. Dark Jedi in the Expanded Universe typically refer to students of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy who have fallen to the dark side, including even Ross Penin, or a dark Jaden Korr.
Dark
Jedi are also extremely common in the KOTOR series in league with the Sith Empire and are often fallen Jedi from the Mandalorian Wars. Dark Jedi also appear in the Jedi Knight series of Star Wars video games, where Kyle Katarn uncovers Imperial plots linked to Dark Jedi. In Jedi Outcast, Katarn faces an entire army of Dark Jedi, cloned and lightly trained force users who follow the main antagonist, but there they are rather called Reborns.
Dark Jedi use the Force for their own ends while attempting to utilize other powers of the Force, owing no allegiance. They do not exclusively bond themselves to either the Light or Dark Sides of the Force. While a Dark Jedi can use
Jedi and Sith Force arts with ease, they rarely obtain the mastery of either side. Sith Lords often trained Force-sensitive beings in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force, but most were never initiated into the rites and into the deep secrets of the Sith. Force-sensitive individuals seem to arise spontaneously and may become adept at the Force without Jedi or Sith involvement. It is true, however, that many notable Dark Jedi have received at least some Jedi or Sith training. But that is not so much training, that could help them to victory even against a medium trained Jedi Knight, not to mention a highly trained Jedi master. Dark Jedi cannot apply Force abilities so effectively, that a skilled master could not deflect, or absorb. They can
paralyze a wookie, who are well known strong at body, but not so strong in mind, so in this screenshot, you can see Zaalbar's icon with a red cross on his picture, which means
he was
paralysed, cannot move. But the right side Dark Jedi is weak to use force power against a Revan-like Jedi, who can easily absorb his attempt. Also, keep in mind, the best choices against eve multiple Dark
Jedi is a droid! Especially with a baragwin armor, the droid is almost invulnerable, meanwhile he can use the built-in droid arms against the Dark Jedi!
And since a
paralyzing droid arm is not a Force power, the Jedi can not protect
themselves against it, just look at the left guy, he is already paralyzed by the smart T3, the middle guy gets his dose right now, and it can be repeated again and again, so your Revan has an easy task slicing up these
move less enemies. On the other side, they are easy pray for a master, since they cannot defend themselves against powerful Force attacks, so they often found helpless, if attacked by a stronger Jedi. If you knock in every room, just let the wise Jolee Bindo go in first, the elderly Master can say hello with a
nice and strong
paralyzing Force power, so the guys inside will be
frozen, can be surrounded, and can be sliced into tiny peaces with care. Also, if an other dark Jedi inflicts into close quarter combat, he concentrates on the fencing, and an easy target for Force powers from a distance, for example in this
screenshot my Revan is practicing the the D.J. (not Disk Jockey, but Dark Jedi), while Jolee and Juhani
siphons his life powers with the Force, roasting the DJ with purple Force lightnings.
A non-canonical Revan for example did not consider himself completely bound by Sith tradition (he begun training his first apprentice, Darth Malak, and applied many other fallen Jedi, and even trained new ones. It was believed by some that he planned to eventually do away with the Rule of Two entirely in order to have legions of Sith at his disposal, however the Dark Jedi legion were not his apprentice, but his private elite army. After a good Revan was redeemed to the Light, these Dark Jedi follow the orders of the newly born Sith Lord, Malak, staying under his control.
It is also worthy to note that though Dark Jedi may believe themselves to be acting for a "greater good," the Dark Side of the Force is a path that ultimately leads to self-destruction (as was the case when Ulic Qel-Droma, Revan, and Anakin Skywalker fell to the Dark Side), regardless of the motives or misguided morals of those who walk it. Contrary to the Jedi method of purging emotion and gaining power via meditation and training,
Dark Jedi, like Sith, allow their emotions to empower them. It can be interesting to notice, how many kinds of Dark Jedi exists. One is wielding a single bladed purple lightsaber, very probably from his Jedi past. The other also has his old purple Jedi saber, but also has a red one, probably after a Sith training he made his own weapon, and wielding both in each hand. And there is a guy, who has a double bladed red lightsaber, which needs a totally different fighting style. So these Dark
Jedi have the most variable pre-educations, and skills, which they brought from their dark past.
Many Jedi joined Revan and Malak when they joined the Mandalorian Wars, and almost all of them became Dark Jedi when the Jedi Civil War started.
Jedi who hadn't followed them were captured and turned to Dark Jedi. They formed legions, which consisted of from a couple to even dozens of individuals. The dark Jedi army had female and male members, too. (For example this is a female Dark Jedi, who are brave to duel against Jolee Bindo in the corridors of the rakatan temple.) However they were to proud to obey orders, it seemed there were yet some kind of hierarchy among them. There were always a
team leader, who made the conversations with us, also, they had some kind of right to order attack if needed. These squad leaders however wore absolutely the same grey uniform that the others did. But at the end of the game we will meet some really experienced, elite Dark Jedi, who were the right hands of Darth Malak, similar to an elite body guard formation, or something like
that. When the battle droids and the basic Dark Jedi teams failed to stop the infiltrating team of Revan in the Star Forge, as the last hope before their final confrontation Malak sent these elite Dark Jedi against his former master, Revan. These guys wore special outfit, which had the same shape, but the
colors were very different, blue, red, and special grey with patterns on his suit. In the game KotOR2 we will encounter higher ranked dark Jedi, who wore similar, but yet different uniforms and masks, who were rather commanders, than elite persons. They were cruel, and used Force Powers to revenge things, or to punish mistakes.
The first famous Dark Jedi was believed to be Xendor, the ancient progenitor of the Sith Lords. We also hear about Exar Kun, and Ulic Quel Droma in the Kotor games, but the most powerful, and the most famous ancient Dark Jedi, who could be not just heard by, but could be met was Ajunta Pall.
Ajunta Pall was a Dark Jedi, and later one of the first Sith Lords following the Hundred Year Darkness. Ajunta Pall was one of the founding leaders of the old Sith during the time of the Old Sith Empire
located on Korriban, shortly after the Hundred-Year Darkness. He was among the first group of Exiles that settled on Ziost. At the Battle of Corbos, which saw the defeat and exile of the Dark Jedi, he personally slew more than a dozen Jedi in battle. He was a master of Sith Alchemy. After his death, Ajunta Pall's spirit continued to haunt his tomb. Over the centuries, he began to question his actions as a Sith Lord and the downfall the Lords experienced at each others' hands. His most famous and very upset sentence was "So strong, we thought... so wrong..." During his 3000 years, he had enough to think it over, what we achieved with his power, what he gained with his money, what poor he was in the biggest richness, realizing that destructions, negative thoughts and acts, egoism, hunger lack of restrain, and serving the evil led nowhere, he felt to his share in the
darkness, the pain, and
aloneness, forever suffering with the bad memories what he had done, and could do nothing to change the life he wasted.
People often realize in their dead bed, how they ruined their lives, and what the chased, where all fake and miserable things,
no one can take his goods to the grave, only his naked soul, which will be measured, and if found guilty, it will stay in the eternal darkness without any hope to join the saved and redemptioned in the Light. And this is the biggest message, and not for the Dark Jedi, but every human being on Earth.
In the tales, these situations can be cured. During the Jedi Civil War, Revan entered Ajunta Pall's tomb, took his magical or ritual blade and turned the Sith Lord back to the light side almost three thousand years after his death, allowing him to become one with the Force and experience peace at last. So his spirit can be canonically redeemed by the Light Side Revan. In the game, a DS player can also fight him and destroy his spirit (for "dark-side points"), but that is a non-canonical version.
